Membrane awning as an architectural link

The freeform membrane roof for the International School of Stuttgart establishes an architectural link between the school building and kindergarten and provides shelter from the sun, rain and snow during games and breaks. The size of the membrane, which is made of weatherproof PVC-coated polyester, permitted the use of wooden masts with a warm aesthetic: the four conical supports, each of which is a different height, are made of turned laminated larch. In combination with the undulating geometry of its edges, the dynamic minimal surface form of the awning blends in elegantly with the existing buildings and the large trees on the grounds.
