Museum in Dessau
Design for an interactive window on the city
Created as a competition entry, the design for a museum in Dessau uses an interactive walkway to establish a link with the historic architectural context and enters into a symbiosis with it. The curved outer skin of the organically shaped building is almost completely transparent and uses “windows on the city” to open up views of iconic modernist structures like the Bauhaus Building, the Masters’ Houses and the Dessau-Törten housing estate. To keep the exhibition space in the upper storey as flexible as possible, it was subdivided into cells that allow the individual spaces to be connected and enlarged as required with minimal effort.

The design is based on a net-like structural system with horizontal beams that converge on two levels to form radial supporting structures with points or circles at their centre.
